Valve Stem Seals
Excessive oil consumption from worn or degraded valve stem seals can be problematic, leading to serious engine problems if not repaired. Thatâs why the Fel-Pro Engineering team reviews the OE designs for each valve stem seal to determine the best solution for the application. Fel-Pro valve stem seals help ensure a reliable seal on even the most troublesome applications.

What is a Valve Stem Seal?
Valve stem seals allow a controlled amount of oil to lubricate the valve stem as it moves in the valve guide. The amount of oil that passes by the valve stem seal must be precisely controlled. Too little oil causes stem and guide to wear; too much oil causes carbon build-up on valves resulting in a decrease in volumetric efficiency and rough idle, carbon build-up on piston tops resulting in detonation/pre-ignition issues, increased emissions, catalytic converter degradation, and excessive oil consumption.
Symptoms â¯of Bad Valve Stem Sealsâ¯
With repeated exposure to heat and oil, the valve stem seals can fail. They become hard or worn and can no longer properly control the amount of oil going down the valve guide. Signs of bad valve stem seals include:
Blue-white smoke from the tailpipe especially at cold startup or acceleration.
Excessive oil consumption.
Degradation of the catalytic converter resulting in a Check Engine light.
Excessive carbon buildup on valves resulting in rough running.
An installation tool is included in Fel-Pro valve stem seal sets (where applicable). This tool is a thin plastic sleeve which is placed over the tip of each valve stem during installation. It protects the inner lip of the seal from damage by the lock grooves in the valve stem. As noted, positive style seals require a driver or socket to lightly drive the seal onto the valve guide. O-ring style seals are installed once the valve spring/retainer is compressed below the receiver groove for the O-ring.
Differences in Valve Stem Seal Designs
There are three basic stem seal designs â deflector, positive, and O-ring style seals. Deflector seals (umbrella seals) are secured to the valve stem and move with the valve to shield the valve guide from excess oil. Positive seals are fixed to the valve guide boss and function as squeegees to wipe and meter oil on the stem as they pass through the seals. O-ring style seals usually fit under the valve spring retainer sealing the spring retainer to valve stem interface to stop oil from running down the valve stem.
